Biography: Stacie Joy Orrico was born on March 3rd, 1986, in Seattle, Washington, the middle child in a family of five siblings. When Stacie was still young, her family relocated to Denver, Colorado.

a spiritual sensation

Stacie sang at school and in church, but although music had always been a part of the Italian-descended Orrico household, Stacie did not foresee a future singing professionally. "I had always loved to sing," Stacie explains, citing Whitney Houston, Crystal Lewis, Christina Aguilera, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Mariah Carey, and Celine Dion among her influences. "But I was not raised in a showbiz home, and my parents are the farthest thing from stage parents."

In 1998, the Orrico family attended Praise in the Rockies, a Christian artist seminar held in Estes Park, Colorado. With a friend`s encouragement, the then 12-year-old Stacie entered a singing competition at the conference. But the contest was much bigger than Stacie -- who had entered just for fun -- had thought, so she was all the more surprised when she won. Even more astounding was that the Executive Vice President of A&R at ForeFront Records heard Stacie perform, and then approached the Orricos about signing her to a developmental deal.

In spite of this incredible opportunity, Orrico had her doubts. Many people urged her to wait, saying she was too young to begin a music career. But when Stacie heard the song "For Such a Time as This" on a Crystal Lewis record, she decided to take advantage of the opportunity. It was a wise move. After two years of work, Stacie`s debut album, Genuine, was released in August 2000. It reached number one on Billboard`s Heatseekers chart and number six on Billboard`s Top Contemporary Christian chart. The album was an unprecedented debut for a new artist, and went on to sell over 500,000 copies. Another EP, Christmas Wish, followed the next year.

Orrico soon caught the eye of Destiny`s Child, and in short order the group asked her to open for them during their 2001 U.S. tour. Stacie was impressed by Destiny`s Child`s generous spirit. "They taught me a lot," Stacie recalls. "There they were, on top of the world, yet I would watch them still take time to talk to the fans, and listen to people, and never act jaded."

Afterward, Orrico got to work on a new album, this time for Virgin Records and geared toward a mainstream audience. The self-titled Stacie Orrico was released in March 2003, along with its breakthrough single, "Stuck," about the pitfalls of teenage relationships. Next, Stacie signed on for the season finale of the NBC drama, American Dreams. She played Peggy Santiglia of the Angels, performing the hit "My Boyfriend`s Back."

"The way they produced it was all retro," Orrico said, but otherwise, there was no trouble.

Currently, Stacie is on the road promoting Stacie Orrico. For a family that had no background in the music industry, the Orricos have all embraced Stacie`s success. Mother Patty has been Stacie`s tutor and companion while on tour, and her older brother Jesse has served as Stacie`s road manager. No matter how tiring her newfound fame may get, Stacie has a great support network of family and friends to keep her on the right track.
